What is a Whole Food Plant-Based (WFPB) diet?

A whole food plant-based (WFPB) diet focuses on consuming minimally processed plant foods such as fruits, vegetables, whole grains, legumes, nuts, and seeds. It excludes or minimizes processed foods, added sugars, oils, and animal products. The emphasis is on natural, nutrient-dense foods that are close to their original form, promoting health and reducing the risk of chronic diseases.

What are the benefits of eating a WFPB diet?

Helps to maintain a healthy body weight

Whole food plant based (WFPB) eaters tend to be slimmer than omnivorous eaters. A WFPB diet is rich in whole grains and vegetables, which are low in glycemic index (GI) so they are more slowly digested, which prolongs the feeling of fullness and reduces blood sugar spikes. Fruit also contains a vast variety of antioxidants, which help to detoxify and safely excrete toxins stored in fat cells, promoting weight loss. The high fibre content in a WFPB diet helps to keep the digestion and metabolism fired up and promotes the feeling of fullness for longer.

Helps to keep your heart healthy and reduce risk of heart disease

A diet low in saturated fat and high in antioxidants (i.e. less meat and diary products and more whole grains, vegetables and fruits) helps to reduce the risk of cardiovascular disease.

Following a plan of eating mostly unprocessed whole foods can help to cut out processed meats, refined flours, sugar and processed fried foods. Swapping these pro-inflammatory foods for anti-inflammatory plant based foods does your heart the world of good!
